DIY: Hot Cocoa Mix, 2 Ways

Wondering what to do with all those pillowy marshmallows from this post? Make jars of hot cocoa mix!

You could use store bought 'mallows of course, but seriously how cute!?

I've always thought homemade cocoa mix layered in a jar was such a cute gift idea for the holidays, but never tried it until now. Let me tell you, this whole project took about 30 minutes tops. That's with me stopping to take a zillion pictures of everything. So if you don't take pictures of literally everything you make like I do, you'll probably finish in under 20.

The cocoa mix is ridiculously simple. A box of pudding mix and dry milk powder are the basics. While at first I didn't love the idea of using something so processed as pudding mix, they aren't as bad as you'd think. Mainly they are sugar and modified food starch, which is simply starch that has been altered to be more shelf stable, thicken at different temperatures, etc. If you want more info go to It's definitely a processed product, but for a special treat I'd say it's ok. Dry milk powder, while kind of odd, is actually just dried milk. That's it. While you might not use it as it's original purpose intended- mix with water to make milk- it's great in this cocoa mix and other recipes, like muffins.

I did 2 different mixes- a white chocolate mint and a dark chocolate peppermint. Both look equally delicious layered in jars with a big pile of homemade marshmallows on top. A jar of cocoa mix + a cozy throw + blu-ray movie + box of popcorn= best movie night gift basket. Give this as a hostess gift instead of wine to change it up. You could even just keep them for yourself because they look adorable on the counter. So, give these a try and let me know how it goes!

White Chocolate- Mint Cocoa Mix

1 package white chocolate pudding mix

1 cup dry non-fat milk powder

1 teaspoon cocoa powder

1 cup green mint chips (I used Guillard's)

1 1/2 -2 cups marshmallows (enough to fill jar to top)

Dark Chocolate- Peppermint Cocoa Mix

1 package chocolate pudding mix

1 cup dry non-fat milk powder

1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder

1 cup dark chocolate chips

4 crushed candy canes (roughly a scant cup)

1 1/2-2 cups marshmallows (enough to fill jar to top)

Instructions: Mix pudding mix and milk powder together with cocoa powder. Layer in bottom of jar or container. Add chips on top, followed by candy canes (for dark chocolate mix), then marshmallows.
